Washington 67, Portland 63
  •

SEATTLE (AP) -Ryan Appleby scored 18 points, including a shot with five seconds left in the game, to lead Washington to a 67-63 nonconference victory over Portland.

The Huskies (5-4) also got 11 points from Jon Brockman and 10 from Tim Morris.

Nik Raivio led Portland (3-7) with 23 points, including 13 of Portland's last 15 in the first half. Taishi Ito scored the Pilots' first seven points and finished with 13.

Luke Sikma, the son of former Seattle SuperSonics star Jack Sikma, had just six points, but also pulled down a game-high seven rebounds for the Pilots.

After a cold-shooting first half, when they hit just 33 percent from the field (10 of 30), the Huskies drained 14 of 19 during the second half, and did not miss a shot during the final seven minutes.

Appleby made his first start of the year for Washington after missing the first seven games while recovering from thumb surgery. He buried three straight 3-pointers at the outset of the second half to help the Huskies overcome a 30-24 halftime deficit.

The second half swung back and forth. The Huskies went ahead to stay, 59-57, on a turnaround five-footer by Artem Wallace with just under five minutes left.

Washington used its fourth different starting lineup of the season and second in the past two games. This one included the first starts of the season for senior guard Appleby and junior center Wallace.

Raivio didn't get his first points until 7:20 remained in the first half. But by halftime, he had 13, including Portland's last eight of the half: a 22-foot 3-pointer from the left of the lane, a putback, and another 3-pointer from the left side.

Raivio, who came in averaging 11.2 points per game, scored all but two of Portland's final 15 first-half points.

Portland missed its first four shots of the game and didn't get on the board until Taishi Ito drained a 3-pointer more than four minutes into the game. But the Pilots shot 60 percent for the rest of the first half and were 12 of 24 through the first 20 minutes.
