Memphis has no problems with SMU to remain perfect
  •

MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Short-handed Memphis showed off its depth with one impressive performance Wednesday night.

Reserve guard Andre Allen scored a career-high 19 points, Joey Dorsey had 10 points and 14 rebounds and the top-ranked Tigers beat SMU 77-48 to extend the nation's longest home-court winning streak to 45 games.

The Tigers played without Robert Dozier, who served a suspension related to an off-the-court incident. Dorsey was held out of the starting lineup because of his inconsistent play in last weekend's win over UTEP and Chris Douglas-Roberts was limited to 13 minutes because of the flu.

"Someone else has to step up," Allen said. "We've got five people on our bench who could start for anyone in the country. I just saw tonight's (situation) as us being a player down."

Dorsey had started 91 of 93 games since his freshman season with the Tigers (22-0, 8-0 Conference USA).

"If Joey is not consistent, we've got to be ready to go without him," Memphis coach John Calipari said. "If I put him on the bench and he looks like he doesn't want to be there, like the UTEP game, then just don't play and we're going to go on without you and try to win a ballgame."

Allen went 5-for-8 from 3-point range and 7-of-13 from the field overall in a season-high 23 minutes. His effort helped offset a four-point outing by Douglas-Roberts.

"(Allen) is definitely capable of games like this when he decides to shoot the ball," Tigers guard Antonio Anderson said. "But he doesn't like taking a lot of shots. As the game went on, we were definitely trying to find him. He just came out and made a lot of shots."

Without Dozier, averaging 10.5 points and 7.3 rebounds, and with Douglas-Roberts limited, the Tigers struggled in the opening minutes. Memphis missed seven of its first eight shots and, after Bamba Fall's hook shot fell, was behind 7-3.

Calipari eventually got a spark from Allen, who fueled a 14-3 run with two 3-pointers and a driving layup. The Tigers followed that run with another, scoring 15 of the game's next 17 points on their way to 40-18 halftime lead.

Allen had another 3-pointer during the second run.

In the second half, the Tigers stretched their lead to 40 points. The Tigers committed only seven turnovers, including one in the first period.

Fall and Jon Killen scored 12 points apiece for SMU (7-13, 1-6), which has lost eight of its last nine games.

"They're a good team and I think it was a good experience for us," SMU coach Matt Doherty said. "We would have loved to come in here and win the basketball game, but I think at the end of the day we just wanted to come in and get the experience."
