ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) -Brandon Long scored 18 points and Anthony Vereen added 14 as Texas-Arlington beat Hardin-Simmons 84-64 on Saturday.
The Mavericks (1-0) jumped out to a 31-11 lead, but the Cowboys went on a 16-2 run to trim the lead to 33-27. The Mavericks answered with a 9-2 run to lead at halftime 42-29.
The Cowboys (0-1) cut the lead to 10 in the second half but could not keep up with five Mavericks who scored in double digits.
Rob Yeatts and Aaron Thornton were the only Cowboys to reach double digits. Yeatts scored 14 on 4-of-11 shooting while Thornton scored 10 on 5-of-11 shooting.
The Hardin-Simmons bench outscored Texas-Arlington 29-15.
