CATONSVILLE, Md. (AP) -Garrison Carr scored a career-high 34 points and American snapped a four-game losing streak by defeating Maryland-Baltimore County 74-61 on Saturday night.
Carr hit a career-high eight 3-pointers and eclipsed the 1,000-point plateau for the Eagles (5-5), who handed the Retrievers (5-5) their third defeat in four games.
Carr scored his 1,000th point on a reverse layup with 10:15 left in the first half, becoming the 27th player in American's school history to attain the milestone.
Derrick Mercer added 13 points for American, finishing one point shy of 1,000 for his career.
Darryl Proctor had 22 points and 11 rebounds for UMBC.
The Retrievers whittled a 60-38 deficit with 9:26 remaining to eight points when Justin Fry's jumper capped a 16-2 run with 4 minutes left.
Jay Greene added 16 points and Matt Spadafora had 11 for UMBC.
