NEW YORK (AP) -Malcolm Delaney scored 15 of his 25 points in the first half to lead Virginia Tech to a 64-52 victory over Columbia in the opening round of the Holiday Festival tournament at Madison Square Garden on Saturday.
Delaney also had nine rebounds for the Hokies (7-4), who outrebounded the Lions 43-32. Reserve A.D. Vassallo scored 16 points for Virginia Tech and Jeff Allen added 13.
Jason Miller led Columbia (3-6) with 12 points. Joe Bova added 10 points and nine rebounds.
St. John's, which won the tournament for the 14th time in 2005, was playing Marist in the second game.
