WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- With two of its top players injured and the leading scorer having an off shooting night, No. 10 Purdue took advantage of its depth in a 70-55 victory over IPFW on Monday.
JaJuan Johnson had career highs of 21 points and nine rebounds to help the Boilermakers (10-2) to their fifth straight win. The 6-foot-10 forward was 10-of-14 from the field and had three blocks.
Defensive stopper Chris Kramer has a foot injury that limited him to 12 minutes, starting forward Nemanja Calasan played just 3 minutes with a knee injury and top scorer Robbie Hummel shot 3-for-10 and scored just six points.
Johnson stepped in to lead the Boilermakers in scoring for the second time this season.
"That's definitely the beauty of our team," he said. "There's so many people that can do different things. If one person's not doing something, someone else can pick it up."
Hummel, the two-time Big Ten player of the week, had averaged 19.3 points and 10.6 rebounds in his previous three games. Johnson picked up the scoring slack.
"He's really worked on his game, and he's really worked hard in the weight room," Kramer said. "You can see the progression from the beginning of the season to now."
E'Twaun Moore scored 19 points and reserve Marcus Green had 12 points and nine rebounds for the Boilermakers.
Moore was impressed with Green's effort.
"He is a spark for us, definitely one of the most important players on the team," Moore said. "He's the extra boost coming off the bench. He was great for us tonight."
Nick Daniels had a career-high 14 points for the Mastodons (4-8), who lost their third in a row. Purdue held IPFW to 39 percent shooting and committed just seven turnovers.
IPFW coach Dane Fife went straight to the team bus after the game and did not speak to the media.
Kramer sprained his left foot last Thursday, aggravated it in Saturday's 76-58 win over then-No. 22 Davidson, then took himself out of Monday's game. He said he doesn't know his status for Sunday's game against Valparaiso, but said the break will help him heal.
He was dealing with the injury while he helped Purdue shut down national scoring leader Stephen Curry of Davidson.
"I tried to suck it up against Davidson, tried to give the team as much as I could for as long as I could," he said. "I tried to come back (against IPFW) and I heard it pop a couple times."
Purdue coach Matt Painter wanted to put Calasan back in the game, but the left knee wouldn't cooperate, and he said he couldn't return. Calasan averages just under 10 points per game.
"I had no idea it had gotten that bad," Painter said.
The score was tied at 17 in the first half before Moore scored seven points in an 11-0 run that gave the Boilermakers a 28-17 lead. During that nearly four-minute stretch, IPFW had four turnovers and got off just two shots.
Purdue got a defensive rebound and called a timeout with 1.6 seconds left in the first half. Kramer threw a three-quarter-court pass that Johnson caught near the basket. He turned and banked in a shot in as time expired to give the Boilermakers a 36-22 lead.
"We work on it every day before a game in practice," Johnson said. "The opportunity just presented itself. Kramer threw a good pass and I was just able to catch it and throw it in."
Johnson scored three straight baskets early in the second half to put Purdue in control for good. He made a layup on an assist from Keaton Grant, then a two-handed dunk, then a hook shot to increase Purdue's lead to 47-29.
"They let him catch the ball in the post, and he was just making buckets," Kramer said. "Once you let a guy like that get going, it's easy for us to look for him and get it to him."
A steal and dunk by Green made it 65-41 with just under five minutes to play.
Green said the Boilermakers knew they would have to follow up their performance against Davidson with a strong effort.
"It was a quick turnaround, but we're not going to take anybody lightly," Green said. "I know everybody probably circles us on their calendar and looks forward to playing us. We were definitely ready coming out here."
