SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) -Randy Culpepper set a school record with eight 3-pointers, helping Texas-El Paso beat James Madison 79-66 on Monday night in the first round of the Cable Car Classic.
Culpepper scored 30 points, five shy of his career high, as the Miners (7-4) won their season-high third straight. Sophomore Gabriel McCulley scored a career high 13 points in his first career start. Stefon Jackson also had 13.
The Miners meet Santa Clara for the tournament title on Tuesday night. The Broncos beat Belmont 83-80 in an earlier game.
Julius Wells and Devon Moore each scored 13 points to lead the Dukes (7-5), who had a three-game winning streak snapped. James Madison meets Belmont in Tuesday's consolation game.
Culpepper was 8-of-14 from long range, and the Miners were 14-of-33, one short of matching the team record for made 3-pointers.
The Miners led at halftime, 34-24.
