Jackson State at Baylor

Balanced scoring by No. 19 Baylor dooms Jackson State
  •

WACO, Texas -- Baylor didn't waste any time setting the tone against Jackson State and that was just what the team had in mind.

Kevin Rogers scored 21 and Henry Dugat had 20 to help No. 19 Baylor beat Jackson State 113-78 on Wednesday.

"Mostly we wanted to work on not starting slow like we had done a few games before," Dugat said. "I think that showed tonight that it was one of our focuses."

Dugat and Rogers shared the scoring as Baylor jumped out to a 13-4 lead before five unanswered Jackson State points quickly cut the Bears' lead to four.

"As far as today goes I think that our first group out there did a great job and they really got us off to a great start and helped us set the tone," Baylor coach Scott Drew said. "Everybody played and everybody played hard. A lot of good things were accomplished and now we are fully focused and ready for (South Carolina) and then the Big 12."

Drew said Rogers "did a very good job going 10-for-13 and he got us off to a good start but he did it with high percentage shots and a lot of work in the paint, which is what we need."

LaceDarius Dunn added 16 points and 10 rebounds. Josh Lomers had 14 points and Tweety Carter scored 12 for Baylor (12-1). All 12 Baylor players on the roster had points.

Jeremy Caldwell scored 25 and Grant Maxey had 16 for Jackson State (1-11).

The teams swapped baskets until three consecutive Baylor 3-pointers put Baylor up 28-18 with 10:16 left in the first half. From there, Baylor went on a 10-3 run to go ahead 38-19 with 7:38 left.

Later in the period, two 3-pointers by Rogers and a three-point play by Dugat comprised a 9-0 run that put Baylor ahead 53-28.

Baylor led by as many as 42 in the second half, going up 98-56 on a jumper by Fred Ellis with 7:06 remaining. Baylor made 70 percent of its field goals in the first half, hitting 24-of-34, and hit 64 percent (44-of-69) for the game.

Jackson State coach Tevester Anderson, whose team has played at Kansas, Arizona State and Louisiana State so far this year, said Baylor may be the best team his players have faced this season.

"If you give them a little opening, they are going to make the shot and not many teams can say that," Anderson said.
