LOS ANGELES (AP) -Freshman Jarred Dubois scored 39 points to lead host Loyola Marymount back from a 17-point deficit en route to the Lions' first win of the season, defeating non-conference opponent Cal-State Bakersfield 72-69 on Sunday.
Despite the win, LMU (1-15) concluded the non-conference portion of their schedule with its worst first half of a season in Lions history. The Lions open their 14-game stretch of Western Conference play on January 10 at Pepperdine.
Coming into the game, Dubois averaged 10.9 points per game and had a previous high of 23 points. Against man coverage from the Roadrunners, Dubois caught fire and connected on 11-15 from the field, 5-7 from behind the three-point line and 12-15 from the free throw line. Dubois scored 24 points in the second half.
Dubois' point total shattered the 28-year old LMU record for points in a game for a freshman.
Bakersfield (4-12), a Division I Independent, has lost 10 of their last 11 games.
The Roadrunners broke out to a 23-6 lead less than 12 minutes into the game but the Lions narrowed the lead to 38-32 by halftime.
Trent Blakley led Bakersfield with 19 points and the Roadrunners held a 26-2 point advantage from the bench.
