Arizona State at Oregon State

No. 24 Arizona State 49, Oregon State 38
  •

CORVALLIS, Ore. -- Jamelle McMillan did his best to put on a show for his dad.

With Portland Trail Blazers coach Nate McMillan looking on, the younger McMillan made his first start of the season and scored 14 points for No. 24 Arizona State in a 49-38 victory over Oregon State on Saturday night.

"He does everything he can with the time he has to be there for me, so it was a big game for me," Jamelle McMillan said.

While it was a dismal night shooting for both teams, the Sun Devils (17-5, 6-4 Pac-10) won their fourth consecutive conference road game, their longest streak since winning five straight in 1980-81.

Rickey Claitt had 13 points and was the only player in double figures for Oregon State (10-11, 4-6), which hit just 32 percent of its shots from the floor. And it wasn't a matter of particularly paralyzing defense on ASU's part.

"We did have some open looks," Claitt said. "We just didn't make them."

The Sun Devils didn't fare much better offensively, hitting just 38 percent from the floor. Jeff Pendergraph led Arizona State with 15 points, all in the second half, and had six rebounds.

"There were no easy baskets to come by tonight," Sun Devils coach Herb Sendek said. "That was definitely a defensive-slanted contest."

The Beavers, who didn't win a single Pac-10 game last season, had a four game winning streak snapped with a 56-53 loss to Arizona on Thursday.

Arizona State was coming off a 66-57 victory Thursday at Oregon. That game was marked in the final minutes by a scary injury to Sun Devils guard Derek Glasser, who was motionless on the court for several moments.

Glasser didn't play against the Beavers with what the team described as a neck bruise. McMillan started in his place.

Nate McMillan attended the game on a day off for the Blazers, who host the New York Knicks on Sunday.

"With Jemelle it always means a lot" when his father can get to a game, Sendek said. "It's always important. His heart is in the right place. But it was extra special for he and his family that they were together."

The Sun Devils saw the return of Latvian forward Rihards Kuksiks, who missed Thursday's game because of a virus. Kuksiks finished with nine points.

Both teams set the offensive tone early, with Arizona State leading 8-5 at the halfway point of the first half.

McMillan provided most of the period's scoring with four 3-pointers. His last gave Arizona State a 19-13 lead at the break, and only McMillan (12) and James Harden (seven) scored for the Sun Devils in the half.

Oregon State coach Craig Robinson said the Beavers were focused going into the game on Harden, who led the team with an average of 21 points per game. Harden finished with just nine points against the Beavers.

"He beat us," Robinson said of McMillan.

Oregon State narrowed it to 23-20 on Claitt's layup, but the Beavers couldn't get any closer.

Penderpragh went on a personal 12-point scoring run to put the Sun Devils ahead 38-27 midway through the second half.

The Sun Devils routed the Beavers 69-38 in Tempe earlier this season. That had set the mark for the fewest points Arizona State has allowed an opponent since joining the Pac-10.

The Sun Devils have won four straight against the Beavers, and the last four in Corvallis.
