GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) -A.J. Highsmith hit a 3-pointer with 29 seconds to play and Appalachian State defeated North Carolina-Greensboro 70-69 on Thursday night.
After UNC-Greensboro led 63-60 with 4:01 to go on a 3-pointer by Kendall Toney, the Mountaineers (10-16, 7-11 Southern Conference) jumped back ahead 67-65 on a Kellen Brand layup with 2:06 remaining.
The lead was short-lived, however, as Toney hit another 3-pointer and Damian Eargle connected on a free throw for a 69-67 Spartans' (5-21, 4-13) lead with 49 seconds left.
Brand scored 15 points, Donald Sims added 13 and Donterious Hughes chipped in 10 for the Mountaineers.
The Spartans were led by 18 points from Toney and 17 points and eight rebounds from Ben Stywall for his eighth double-double of the season.
The Mountaineers avenged an 85-83 overtime home loss to UNC-Greensboro on Jan. 10.
