ALBANY, N.Y. -- Jay Greene broke out of a five-game offensive slump with 29 points Sunday, leading defending champion Maryland-Baltimore County to a 64-58 victory over Albany and into the America East title game.
The Retrievers, the sixth seeds in the conference tournament, will visit either No. 1 Binghamton or No. 4 New Hampshire next Saturday in the title game. Those teams played the second game of Sunday's semifinal double-header.
UMBC (15-16) took 7:02 to score its first basket and trailed 16-5 with 11:51 left in the first half but caught fire and led by eight at the break. The Retrievers trailed once in the second half, 45-44 with 9:11 remaining.
Greene, who was 14-for-59 from the field and 6-for-42 from 3-point range while averaging 8.3 points over the last five games, was 7-for-12 shooting, 5-for-9 from 3-point range and added three steals Sunday. He was 0-for-8 shooting, all from 3-point range, in Saturday?s win over Boston University, scoring two points on late free throws.
Darryl Proctor, who had career-high 33 points Saturday, added 15 and eight rebounds Sunday, while Tim Ambrose led seventh-seeded Albany (15-16), winners over No. 2 Vermont Saturday, with 21 points and eight rebounds.
