IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) -Matt Gatens had 20 points and Jarryd Cole added 19 to lead Iowa past South Carolina State 82-69 Monday night.
Cole sprained his right ankle with 4:57 left in the game and limped slightly as he went to the training room.
Eric May added 18 points for the Hawkeyes (5-7), who survived their first game without second-leading scorer Anthony Tucker. Tucker, who has scored 11.9 points per game, was suspended Sunday following his second arrest of public intoxication in 13 months.
Jason Flagler led South Carolina State (6-3) with 14 points.
The Hawkeyes posted the most points they've scored during Todd Lickliter's three seasons as head coach, topping an 80-51 victory over Prairie View on Dec. 5.
