Virginia vs Maryland

Virginia 74, Maryland 60

  •

COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) - Sammy Zeglinski scored a career-high 25 points, and Virginia beat Maryland 74-60 Saturday to cap a disappointing regular season for the defending Atlantic Coast Conference co-champions.

The Cavaliers (16-14, 7-9) led by 13 with 7:13 left, let the margin shrink to five and then pulled away to present coach Tony Bennett with his 100th career win. Zeglinski, a junior guard, went 6 for 7 from beyond the arc in eclipsing his previous best of 24 points.

Mustapha Farrakhan scored 19 and Assane Sene had 15 to help Virginia secure its fourth win in five games. The Cavaliers also avenged a 24-point loss to Maryland in January.

Playing on Senior Day in a packed arena, the Terrapins (18-13, 7-9) fell behind late in the first half and never recovered. Maryland, which tied Duke for the ACC regular-season title last year, has dropped three straight and five of seven.

Jordan Williams scored 17 for the Terrapins, who head into the ACC tournament with their longest losing streak of the season.

Maryland's three seniors were honored before the game and inserted into the starting lineup by coach Gary Williams. Dino Gregory finished with 15 points, and Adrian Bowie and Cliff Tucker each scored five.

Tucker scored four points in an 8-0 run that got the Terrapins to 63-58 with 5:49 left. But Maryland came up empty on its next three possessions, and the Cavaliers got two free throws from Farrakhan for a seven-point cushion with 2:50 remaining.

Virginia went 9 for 9 at the line the rest of the way.

After Maryland cut an eight-point deficit to 41-37 early in the second half, Terps guard Terrell Stoglin was called for a foul near the Virginia basket. Gary Williams vehemently argued the call and was slapped with a technical foul.

Zeglinski made one of two shots and Sene followed with a layup to put the Cavaliers up by seven.

Bowie answered with a three-point play, but Zeglinski hit a 3-pointer, Joe Harris made a layup and Sene scored after the Cavaliers got two offensive rebounds. That put Virginia ahead 51-40 with 14:34 to go.

Zeglinski scored 14 points on 5-for-5 shooting, and a first half that featured nine lead changes and five ties ended with the Cavaliers up 37-33.

Virginia trailed 23-22 before Sene made a layup, Farrakhan hit a short jumper and Zeglinski connected from beyond the arc to put the Cavaliers ahead for good.

Virginia went 6 for 11 from 3-point range and committed only two turnovers during the first 20 minutes.
