PISCATAWAY, N.J. (AP) - Dane Miller scored 12 to help Rutgers hold off Dartmouth 62-56 on Friday night in the season opener for both teams.

With a lineup that included six freshmen, Rutgers youth was quickly on display as it spurted to an eight-point advantage just five minutes into the game. Dartmouth caught up to tie at 15, and Rutgers went back up by nine before going off with a one-point lead at the half.

Rutgers shot well (11-for-20) in the opening half but was hampered by nine turnovers.

Dartmouth, 5-23 a year ago, opened its season with a loss for the seventh straight year. Rutgers is coming off a 15-17 season.

R.J. Griffin led Dartmouth with 15 points.

The four freshmen guards - Myles Mack, Eli Carter, Seagears and Malick Kone - combined for 33 points (13-for-27), three assists and eight turnovers.

Rutgers jumped to a 10-2 lead and led by nine points 14 minutes into the game. But Dartmouth trailed by only one, 31-30, at halftime.

Halfway through the second half, the lead went to eight points. While Rutgers never did lose its lead, Dartmouth wouldn't go away.

Dartmouth eventually closed to within three points after a pair of free throws by Jvonte Brooks and a 3-pointer by Griffin. That left the score at 59-56 with 1:10 left in the game.

Rutgers held on when sophomore Gil Biruta and freshman Jerome Seagears dropped in three free throws.

The Scarlet Knights committed 16 turnovers, but had seven steals.
