Massachusetts vs Boston College

UMass 82, Boston College 46

BOSTON (AP) - Chaz Williams scored 16 points and Freddie Riley 14 to lead Massachusetts to an 82-46 win over cross-state rival Boston College Monday night.

The Minutemen (4-0) won for just the second time in the last 13 meetings against Boston College. Cady Lalanne and Jesse Morgan each added 11 points.

It was the second straight lopsided loss for the Eagles (1-2) after a season-opening win over New Hampshire. Boston College, picked to finish last in the Atlantic Coast Conference's preseason poll, lost 86-64 at intrastate rival Holy Cross on Friday.

Patrick Heckmann, who missed Friday's loss with a sprained ankle, led BC with 11 points and Matt Humphrey had 10.

UMass led 37-26 at halftime and never had its advantage fall below double digits in the second half. The Minutemen opened it to 54-35 on Sampson Carter's put-back with 13:13 minutes to play.

Boston College had cut it to 41-31 on Heckmann's short jumper 3 minutes into the second half, but the Minutemen scored 13 of the next 17 points to take control. Williams started the spree with a 3-pointer from the top of the key and followed with a runner in the lane.

UMass scored 14 straight points later in the second half, turning a 15-point lead to 71-42 on Williams' reverse layup with 5 1/2 minutes left.

The Minutemen hit just 5 of 16 from beyond the arc in the opening half, but they nailed four from long range during a key 4 1/2 minute stretch that turned a six-point deficit into their 11-point halftime edge.

Boston College, which suits nine freshman and lost 10 lettermen from last year's team, pulled to a 20-14 lead midway into the first half before the Minutemen took advantage of the Eagles' poor shooting, ball handling and started nailing 3s of their own. UMass used fullcourt pressure most of the first half, and Boston College had trouble getting ball upcourt at times and into its offensive plays.

The Eagles shot just 30.4 percent in the opening half and committed nine turnovers.

After falling behind early, the Minutemen went on a 17-5 run over the next 10 minutes. Riley, Farrell, Raphiael Putney and Lalanne each hit 3-pointers during the spree.

Former Boston College guard Reggie Jackson, last spring's first-round pick of the Oklahoma City Thunder, was seated courtside.

Boston College next plays Saint Louis in the 76 Classic in Anaheim, Calif. on Thanksgiving Day. UMass will play its next three games in the Battle 4 Atlantis tourney in the Bahamas, starting against Florida State, also on Thanksgiving.
