WASHINGTON (AP) - Charles Hinkle scored 31 points, including 15 free throws in 19 attempts, as American University edged Quinnipiac 74-73 Tuesday night for its third consecutive victory.
Blake Jolivette made 1 of 2 free throws with 8 seconds left to give the Eagles (3-2) their margin of victory. American was awarded 48 free throws in the game and made 34.
A steal by John Schoof ended the final possession for the Bobcats (2-2).
There were 17 lead changes and 12 ties in the contest. A three-point play by Ike Azotam with 1:08 remaining gave Quinnipiac a 72-70 lead, but Hinkle answered with a 3-pointer with 42 seconds left to put American up 73-72. James Johnson made 1 of 2 free throws for the Bobcats to tie it nine seconds later.
Azotam had 20 points and 15 rebounds to lead Quinnipiac and has had double-doubles in all four of the Bobcats' games.
