PHILADELPHIA (AP) - A.J. Davis scored a career-high 29 points, including hitting 8 of 9 from long range, to lead James Madison in an 86-69 win over Rider Friday.
Humpty Hitchens added 16 points, Andrey Semenov 15 and Julius Wells 10 for the Dukes (2-2), who connected on 15 of 21 3-pointers (71.4 percent) just one game after tying school record with 16 3s in a loss to Robert Morris.
The teams stayed close in the opening half and headed to the break tied at 38-all in the first round of the Philly Hoop Group Classic.
Eighteen seconds into the second, Gene Swindle's jumper on a dish from Davis gave the Dukes a lead they wouldn't relinquish. Davis, the Colonial Athletic Association's leading scorer at 23.8 points per game, then knocked down a 3-pointer to further fuel the 8-0 half-opening run.
Brandon Penn led the Broncs (1-5) with 21 points.
