George Mason vs Virginia

Virginia 68, George Mason 48

  •

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) - Sammy Zeglinski scored a season-high 18 points and Virginia won its sixth game in a row Tuesday night, beating George Mason 68-48 in the first meeting of the teams in 14 years.

Mike Scott, Joe Harris and Jontel Evans added 11 points each for Virginia (8-1), which led 33-22 at halftime and opened the second half with a 12-4 burst. The Patriots never again got closer than 10, becoming the ninth consecutive team held under 58 points by Virginia's defense.

George Mason (6-3) had won four straight under first-year coach Paul Hewitt, but had two long scoring droughts in the first half to fall behind by double digits and never recovered.

Vertrail Vaughns, Mike Morrison and Ryan Pearson each scored nine for the Patriots.

The Cavaliers shot a season-best 60.5 percent (26 of 43) and hit 7 of 14 3-point tries.

Despite failing to score in the final 4:25 of the first half, Virginia retook command with a 12-4 flurry at the start of the second. Zeglinski, Scott and freshman Malcolm Brogdon all hit 3-pointers in the spurt, and Assane Sene finished it with a fast-break putback.

That gave Virginia its largest lead at 45-26, but the Cavaliers again went cold. The Patriots used a 14-5 run to close to within 50-40, but Sene scored inside and Harris hit a jumper from the foul line, rebuilding the edge to 54-40 and the Cavaliers cruised to the win.

George Mason turned the ball over 20 times, leading to 23 of the Cavaliers' points.

Virginia coach Tony Bennett emptied his bench in the final minutes.

Zeglinski hit two 3-pointers and scored eight during a 16-3 run that gave Virginia a 20-9 lead after 8 1/2 minutes. The Patriots made only one shot in a span of 7 minutes, then made only one in a span of 5 as the Cavaliers used a 12-2 burst to stretch their lead to 32-15.
