BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) - Joel Smith knocked down a jumper at the buzzer, leading Northeastern to a 53-51 win over Vermont on Friday and snapping a six-game losing streak.
Smith, the lone scorer in double figures for the Huskies (4-7) with 19 points, hit his game-winner after Four McGlynn's two free throws tied it for the Catamounts at 51-all with 4 seconds left.
Smith also hit a trio of 3-pointers, dished out three assists and blocked a shot.
The game was close throughout, as Northeastern outscored Vermont 28-24 in the opening half and the Catamounts had a 27-25 edge in the second half. Neither team managed a lead larger than two points in the game's final 10 minutes.
The Catamounts (6-8) didn't have a single player with double-digit points, but Brian Voelkel had a game-high 11 boards. Vermont had won back-to-back games coming into the contest.
