HUNTSVILLE, Texas (AP) - Steven Werner had 19 points and 12 rebounds in just 17 minutes of action off the bench as Sam Houston State defeated Jarvis Christian 83-49 on Monday night.
Werner led five players scoring in double figures for the Bearkats (6-8). Marcus James added 15 points and 10 rebounds, and Michael Holyfield 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Maurice Jackson had 14 points and nine rebounds for Jarvis Christian, an NAIA school in Hawkins, Texas, that classified the game as an exhibition. The Bulldogs' record remained 2-6.
Sam Houston State took permanent control of the game with an 11-3 run at the end of the first half, which gave it a 38-29 lead at the break.
The Bearkats enjoyed a 58-31 rebounding advantage and outscored Jarvis Christian 48-20 in the paint.
