Wofford vs Wake Forest

Wofford 56, Wake Forest 52

  •

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) - Brad Loesing scored 17 points, including two free throws with 2.2 seconds left, and Wofford held on to beat short-handed Wake Forest 56-52 Monday night.

Kevin Giltner added 11 points for the Terriers (8-6). They were just 5 of 15 from the free-throw line, but built a 13-point lead before halftime and led the entire second half to snap a two-game losing streak.

Travis McKie matched a career high with 25 points for Wake Forest (9-5), which was playing without leading scorer C.J. Harris. He was held out as a precaution after he strained his groin in a Dec. 29 victory over Yale.

Tony Chennault pulled the Demon Deacons within 54-50 with a layup with 59.6 seconds left. Wofford missed three free throws in the final 40 seconds to keep Wake Forest alive. Chennault's layup made it 54-52 with 3.6 seconds left before Loesing iced it in the closing seconds.

Neither team shot particularly well: Wofford was 21 of 61 (34 percent) while Wake Forest wasn't much better at 39 percent (18 of 46). But the Terriers, who are replacing four starters from a team that made consecutive NCAA tournament appearances, made enough plays down the stretch to claim their most significant victory of the season.

Wofford, which had won four in a row before dropping road games at High Point and South Carolina, claimed its first victory over the Demon Deacons since 1905-06, though the schools were playing for just the second time since 1935-36.

Chennault finished with 11 points and Ty Walker added 12 rebounds for Wake Forest, which was just 1 of 10 from 3-point range and missed all five of its 3s in the second half.

At least part of that poor outside shooting was due to the absence of Harris, a third-year starter who averages 18.7 points. He's expected back for the Atlantic Coast Conference opener against Virginia Tech on Saturday.

Without him, the Demon Deacons often looked lost.

Wofford led for most of the first half and built a 13-point lead in the final minute before halftime, using a 24-9 run to go up 32-19 on Aerris Smith's layup with 45 seconds left. In their hottest shooting streak of the night, the Terriers hit 10 of their 15 shots while holding Wake Forest to one field goal in a 6 1/2-minute stretch of that spurt.
