North Florida vs Florida State

Florida St. 75, North Florida 67

  •

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - Michael Snaer had just four points in the first half. But that changed quickly in the second half.

Snaer scored eight points in less than two minutes early in the second half and had 17 of his 21 points after halftime as Florida State held off North Florida 75-67 on Wednesday night.

"Michael Snaer does something that very few guys like him do," North Florida coach Matthew Driscoll said. "He let the game come to him. He made those two back-to-back threes that were crucial and broke our back. He never forced the game tonight. That was pretty impressive."

Okaro White added 15 points and nine rebounds and Terrance Shannon had 12 points for the Seminoles (4-1), who won their fourth straight game after a season-opening loss to South Alabama.

"Physically we gave pretty good effort," Florida State coach Leonard Hamilton said. "But I didn't think that we were all on the same page and in sync offensively. . I'm just pleased that while we are developing the consistency that we don't take any more losses."

Parker Smith scored 20 points and had five rebounds, and Beau Beech added 12 points and five rebounds for North Florida (1-4).

Florida State jumped out to a 16-3 lead at the 14:23 mark of the first half and was ahead by 10, 63-53, with 7:30 left in the game. But North Florida cut the lead to five, 70-65, on a pair of free throws by Smith with 40 seconds left.

"We make a lot of money playing these games," Driscoll said. "We don't come here to get paychecks. We come here to win games. . And if we're down 16-3, we're just going to keep on fighting."

The Ospreys tried to get back in the game by shooting 3-pointers. While Smith made 4 of 9 of his attempts, North Florida shot just 9 of 33 (27.3 percent) from beyond the arc.

But the Seminoles made 5 of 6 free throws down the stretch to win. They finished 23 of 28 from the line, with Snaer making 9 of 10.

Terry Whisnant had eight points in the first half as Florida State led 32-24 at halftime.

Florida State outrebounded North Florida 43-29. The Seminoles have won seven straight home games against teams from the state of Florida.

The Seminoles won despite having 17 turnovers, a number they have hit in three of five games this season.

Florida State played without guard Ian Miller, who has a bone bruise in his right foot. Hamilton said he thinks Miller can play in the team's next game against Minnesota on Tuesday night.
