Lehigh vs VCU

VCU 59, Lehigh 55

  •

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Treveon Graham scored 17 points and Virginia Commonwealth made key defensive stops late and beat Lehigh 59-55 Saturday night.

The Mountain Hawks lost C.J. McCollum, the nation's leading scorer, in the first half with a foot injury. McCollum was on crutches by game's end, his left foot wrapped. He scored just four points, all on free throws, 21.7 below his average.

"It appears as if there may be a break in his foot," Lehigh coach Brett Reed said. "It is too early to make that diagnosis for sure. I'm certainly not an expert in that area. We're going to take him back, do some tests and we'll ultimately have some confirmation from there, but I think it is a little bit more significant than an ankle sprain."

Reed said McCollum has had a problem with ankle sprains in the past, but his guess that there was a fracture was based on "just talking to our trainer and kind of the location of the injury and everything that was associated with it. I don't think that's a position where's there's a lot of strains that take place."

Troy Daniels and Rob Brandenburg added 11 points each for the Rams (12-3), who won their ninth straight despite shooting just 36.1 percent (22 of 61) and making 5 of 27 3-point tries. They turned 22 turnovers into 19 points.

Lehigh (9-4) got 17 points from Holden Greiner and 10 from Gabe Knutson.

The game was close throughout, but Juvonte Reddic and Graham each hit a pair of free throws to break a 46-46 tie.

Knutson's putback with 2:35 left made it 52-51, but Daniels made his third 3-pointer of the night and the Rams held on.
