George Washington vs Richmond

Richmond 73, George Washington 64

  •

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Alonzo Nelson-Ododa made a go-ahead 3-pointer for his only basket of the night with 6:48 to play and Richmond rallied for a 73-64 victory against George Washington Wednesday night.

Cedric Lindsay scored 19 points and Greg Robbins had 15 for the Spiders (17-11, 7-6 Atlantic 10 Conference), who trailed by as many as nine in the second half. Robbins' three-point play pulled them even with 7:13 to play, and after Nelson-Ododa's 3-pointer, Robbins hit one to give the Spiders a 61-55 lead.

Kevin Larsen scored 16 and Kethan Savage 12 for the Colonials (12-14, 6-7).

The game was key for both teams, which started the night in a four-way tie for eighth in the league standings with four games remaining. Only the A-10's top 12 of 16 teams get invited to the conference tournament in mid-March, and George Washington still has games with No. 19 Saint Louis and La Salle, which are both at or near the top of the standings. Richmond plays at Dayton, which needs to surge to get into the tournament mix, and at Virginia Commonwealth, still contending for the A-10 title.

The victory gave Richmond its first three-game winning streak since early December.

The Spiders trailed 48-39 after George Washington opened the second half on a 12-3 burst, but Robbins scored eight points and Kendall Anthony hit back-to-back 3-pointers for Richmond in a 22-7 run.

That made it 61-55. Isaiah Armwood brought the Colonials within three with a free throw and then a basket in the lane, but Lindsay hit a pair of free throws and Robbins scored on consecutive reverse layups, rebuilding the Spiders' lead to 67-58 and the Colonials lost for the fourth time in five games.

It was the final regular season home game for seniors Robbins and Darien Brothers, who scored 12.

Richmond trailed most of the first half, but outscored the Colonials 11-3 over the last 4 minutes to pull even at 36. Wayne Sparrow led the run, hitting a 3-pointer, a free throw, stealing an inbounds pass and feeding Brothers for a 3-pointer and then making the tying free throw with 3.7 seconds to play.

The sloppy half featured 30 personal fouls, including 17 on the Colonials, and a technical foul just 6 minutes into the game on Richmond coach Chris Mooney. Each team also had 10 turnovers.

The Colonials shot 63 percent (12 of 19) in the half, but were just 11 for 18 from the foul line.
