Texas-Arlington vs Boise State

Boise State powers past Texas-Arlington 116-87

BOISE, Idaho (AP) Anthony Drmic matched his career high with 34 points and made five 3-pointers as Boise State cruised to a 116-87 victory over Texas-Arlington on Friday night.

Derrick Marks added 17 points and Ryan Watkins contributed 14 points and 10 rebounds for the Broncos, who scored the second-most points in program history. Boise State shot 57.7 percent from the field and made 13 3-pointers while falling two points short of the school-record 118 set against Portland State on Jan. 25, 1971.

Reger Dowell scored 20 points, Lonnie McClanahan tallied 19 and Vincent Dillard added 18 for UT Arlington.

The Broncos out-rebounded the Mavericks 45-26 and led by as many as 37 points.

Drmic, a junior, previously scored 34 points in a victory over LSU last December.

Boise State starting guard Jeff Elorriaga was held out for precautionary reasons after recently getting hit in the head during practice.

Drmic had 19 first-half points as Boise State led 61-39 at the break. The outburst represented the Broncos' highest-scoring half since a 63-point second half against Drake in a 108-64 victory on Nov. 30, 2011.

Dezmyn Trent finished with 13 points and Mikey Thompson scored 10 for Boise State. Brandon Edwards tallied 13 points for the Mavericks, who shot 43.8 percent from the field and made 12 3-pointers.

Boise State enters the season amid high expectations after going 21-11 last season and making the NCAA tournament for only the sixth time in school history. The Broncos lost to La Salle in the opening four-team round in Dayton, Ohio, and have never won an NCAA tournament contest.

Boise State is the lone NCAA tourney team from last season to return all five starters and the duo of Drmic (17.7) and Marks (16.3) is the seventh highest-scoring returning tandem in the country.

Drmic started strong in the opener by scoring the game's first five points and he had 10 before the game was five minutes old. A monstrous dunk by Marks, and Watkins' inside hoop, pushed the Broncos' lead to 41-20 with 6:40 to go in the half.

Drmic drained his third 3-pointer of the half with six seconds left to provide for the 22-point halftime cushion. He continued his personal onslaught by scoring seven points in the first four minutes of the second half to boost the Broncos' lead to 27.

Boise State's largest lead of 37 was first achieved on Marks' jumper with 9:32 left, making it 94-57.

Texas-Arlington drops to 1-30 when opening the season on the road. The Mavericks went 19-14 last season and were projected to finish seventh in the Sun Belt this season by the conference coaches.

Elorriaga missed three games in the middle of last season due to concussion issues.
