Massachusetts vs Boston College

Williams' big 2nd half leads UMass past BC, 86-73

BOSTON (AP) Chaz Williams scored 15 of his 20 points in the second half to lift Massachusetts to a season-opening 86-73 win over intrastate rival Boston College on Sunday afternoon at TD Garden.

Cady Lalanne had a career-high 27 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for the Minutemen, who outrebounded Boston College 44-27. Sampson Carter added 12 points and eight boards.

Ryan Anderson led the Eagles (0-2) with 22 points, and Olivier Hanlan had 19. The Eagles had just seven rebounds in the second half.

The game was the middle part of the inaugural Coaches vs. Cancer tripleheader, featuring six of the state's Division I programs.

The score was tied at 51 before the Minutemen went on a 14-2 run, with Williams' transition 3 making it 65-53 with 8:57 to play. Williams nailed three from beyond the arc during the spree.

After a free throw by BC's Hanlan, Tyler Bergantino had a tip-in for a basket and Williams capped an 18-3 run over a 4-minute stretch with two free throws, making it 69-54 with 7 1/2 minutes left.

The Minutemen turned up the defensive pressure during the game-breaking run, converting a handful of turnovers into easy transition baskets and wide-open looks at 3s.

UMass outscored BC 54-37 in the second half.

The Eagles closed it to 69-59 on Hanlan's 3-point play with just over 7 minutes left, but never threatened the rest of the way.

It was the 46th meeting of the schools dating back to their first game in the 1905-06 season.

BC had gone on a 9-0 run to open a 45-36 lead on Alex Dragicevich's three-point play with just under 17 minutes to go before the Minutemen answered by scoring the next nine points, tying it on Maxie Esho's drive with 14:12 left.

In the opener, Boston University overcame a late seven-point deficit to beat Northeastern 72-69. Harvard faced Holy Cross in the finale.

Trailing by six late in the first half, the Eagles went on a 15-4 run over the next 4 1/2 minutes en route to a 36-32 halftime edge.

Anderson keyed the run with seven points and Patrick Heckmann hit a 3 and made all three free throws when he was fouled on another attempt.

BC lost its opener Friday night, falling 82-79 in overtime at Providence.
