Drexel vs Rutgers

Allen scores 21 as Drexel tops Rutgers 70-59

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (AP) Tavon Allen scored 16 of his 21 points in the second half to lead Drexel to a 70-59 win over Rutgers in an NIT Season Tip-Off North Regional quarterfinal game Tuesday night.

Damion Lee added 15 for the Dragons (3-1), who play the winner of Tuesday night's Rhode Island-Arizona game in a semifinal at Madison Square Garden on Nov. 27. Frantz Massenat had 12 points and seven assists, while Drexel leading scorer Chris Fouch, saddled with foul trouble much of the game, added 10.

The Scarlet Knights (3-2), who will host two consolation games on Monday and Tuesday, got 13 points and 10 rebounds from Kadeem Jack, who got his second straight double-double. D'Von Campbell added 12 points and J.J. Moore added 10.

With Drexel holding a 48-44 lead, Allen scored nine straight points to put Drexel up 57-44 with 5:13 remaining. The Dragons opened their biggest lead at 70-55.

Rutgers had whittled a 39-30 deficit to 42-41 with 10:44 remaining and had a chance for the lead before Jack missed a jumper. A fast-break lay-up by Kazembe Abif started the Dragons on a 6-1 run to open a 48-42 lead and Rutgers got no closer than 48-44 the remainder of the game.

Drexel shot 45.1 percent (23-for-51) for the game after shooting 51.9 percent (14-for-27) in the second half. The Dragons held Rutgers to 39.6 percent shooting (21-for-53) and forced the Scarlet Knights into 14 turnovers.

Dartaye Ruffin had nine boards for Drexel to help the Dragons to a 36-34 rebounding advantage.

In a first half where both teams shot under 40 percent and combined for 17 turnovers, Drexel snapped a 13-13 tie with a 10-3 run that gave the Dragons the lead for the remainder of the game.

Tempers got somewhat heated with 2:59 left when Lee drove on Craig Brown and threw an elbow in the face area after Lee was called for a foul. After the officials reviewed the play, the foul stood and Lee was called for a flagrant foul.

Lee made one of two and Mack, who coach Eddie Jordan opted to shoot the free throws, made both and later got a layup to pull Rutgers within 24-22. The Dragons scored the final three for a 27-22 lead at intermission.
