Marist vs Maryland

Maryland takes down Marist 68-43

  •

ST. THOMAS, U.S. Virgin Islands (AP) Jake Layman scored 16 points, including 4 of 6 from 3-point range, as Maryland beat Marist 68-43 in the Paradise Jam on Friday.

Layman had 10 in the first half and was four points shy of a career-high for Maryland (2-2). Charles Mitchell came off the bench and controlled the paint, scoring 12 points and grabbing eight rebounds. Maryland made 54 percent of its shots in the second half, after just 33 percent in the first.

Chavaughn Lewis led Marist (0-5) with 13 points, but was 4 of 13 from the field. Marist was held to 26 percent shooting in the game. The Red Foxes were out-rebounded 43-36 and turned the ball over 19 times.

Maryland led 26-20 at the half, but held Marist to without a field goal for over eight minutes in the second half.

Maryland advances to play Northern Iowa on Sunday, after they beat LMU earlier.

The Terrapins opened up the second half against Marist on a 10-0 run, capped by a Layman 3-pointer.

Jake Bowie ended the run with Marist's first 3-pointer of the game and sparked an 8-2 run of its own to make it 38-28 with 13:56 remaining.

But Maryland responded with an 18-2 run to push its lead to 56-30. During the stretch, Marist's coach Jeff Bower was called for a technical foul with 9:57 on the clock.

The Red Foxes' missed jumpers led to several Maryland fast-break layups in transition on the other end.

The first half was much more competitive.

Khallid Hart made a layup to cut Marist's margin to 18-16 early in the game, but that was the first of only two field goals in the final five minutes for the Red Foxes.

Layman's 3-pointer and layup seconds later pushed Maryland's lead to 23-18 with 2:18 left and the Terrapins led 26-20 at the break.

Maryland was troubled by Marist's pressure defense, turning the ball over eight times in the first half.

''We're not very good on the offensive end, so we better be guarding,'' Maryland's coach Mark Turgeon said at halftime.

This was the first meeting between the schools.

Marist missed Thursday's practice after complications with their travel plans. Their plane left three hours late out of New York City and thus missed the connecting flight in Miami.
