ATLANTA (AP) Trae Golden scored 12 of his game-high 20 points in the second half Sunday, when Georgia Tech rallied from an 11-point halftime deficit to beat North Carolina A&T 78-71.
Georgia Tech (4-1) trailed 37-33 at halftime after missing 10 of 18 free throws, and the Yellow Jackets fell behind 45-36 in the second half when Denzel Keys put back an offensive rebound with 13:43 left in the game.
After a Tech timeout, the Jackets went on a 14-3 run to force the first of four ties, and the home team closed the game with a 17-5 run to win.
Richaud Pack led the Aggies with 19 points, and Bruce Beckford added 12 points and 11 rebounds. Golden added seven assists for the Jackets while Marcus Georges-Hunt had 16 points and seven rebounds, and Robert Carter Jr. had nine points and 13 rebounds.
Georgia Tech made 21-of-28 free throws in the second half, when Golden made 9-of-10.
There were 57 fouls and 77 free throws in the game.
The Yellow Jackets were in control through much of an ugly first half until the Aggies scored 12 unanswered points. They took a 27-25 lead when Beckford hit a 3-pointer with 3:24 left in the first half, and grew that to 32-25 when Khary Doby hit a trey with 2:04 to go.
A&T would shoot 6-for-11 on 3-pointers on the way to a 37-33 halftime lead, while Georgia Tech made just 3-of-8 treys.
The Aggies also out-rebounded the bigger Yellow Jackets 21-20 up to intermission as Beckford grabbed nine caroms. He scored nine points in the first half, and Pack led all scorers with 12.
Matters did not improve for the Yellow Jackets early in the second half. The Aggies pushed the lead to 45-36, and when Georgia Tech looked as if it might inch back into the game, Solomon Poole missed an open dunk that caromed off the rim and out of bounds.
At the other end, Daniel Miller was called for his third foul on what might have been a clean block of a Pack shot, and Pack added two free throws. Moments after that, Keyes scored off an offensive rebound for a 49-38 lead for A&T.
Georgia Tech coach Brian Gregory called timeout with 13:43 remaining, and his team responded with a 14-3 run to tie the game at 52 when Carter Jr. completed a three-point play with 11:50 left.
Poole and Georges-Hunt each hit treys in that stretch, and Golden had a steal and a layup and assisted Carter's tying basket.
The Aggies built another four-point lead before the Jackets rallied again to tie on Holsey's 3-point play and then take a 60-58 lead on Golden's steal and layup with 8:06 remaining in the game.
