Texas rolls over Texas State 85-53

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) Cam Ridley scored a career-high 22 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as Texas cruised to an 85-53 victory over Texas State on Saturday night.

The Longhorns (9-1) won their fifth straight game, marking their longest win streak in nearly two years and giving them their 25th straight victory over the Bobcats (3-7). Texas held Texas State to 29.7 percent shooting from the floor and 19.2 percent shooting from 3-point range -- the worst marks by a Longhorns opponent this year.

Texas started the game on a 6-0 run before 3-pointers by Wesley Davis and Joel Wright helped Texas State tie it at 8. The Bobcats hit three of their first 3-point attempts before missing their next eight and going nearly 20 minutes without hitting a single shot from beyond the arc.

Ridley's three-point play with 11:26 left gave Texas a 17-14 lead, but Texas State once again tied the game, this time at 20 on Wright's dunk with 5:59 to go in the first half. The Longhorns ended the half on a 13-2 run to take a 33-22 halftime lead and won the game running away.

''I know Cam told his mom what happened last year was as much his fault as anybody's because he said he could've done more and worked harder,'' Texas head coach Rick Barnes said of Ridley's self-evaluation of his efforts during last year's 16-18 campaign. ''When the freshmen came in a year ago, there wasn't a lot of leadership. I think they were determined to do the opposite for the freshmen this year.''

Ridley scored the first five Texas points of the second half and helped his team outscore Texas State 52-31 in the final 20 minutes. Javan Felix hit a pair of 3-pointers early in the second half and scored 13 points, hitting a career-high four shots from beyond the arc.

''That shot definitely gave me some confidence,'' Felix said. ''This week I was able to get me a lot of reps and focus on the smaller things in my shot. I felt good tonight and a couple of them went in.''

Texas went on a 13-2 run to extend its lead over Texas State to 62-37 before Davis hit a 3-pointer and got the assist on a layup by Kavin Gilder-Tibury. But dunks by Ridley and Holland on an alley-oop pass from Kendal Yancy put the game further out of reach.

''I'm very disappointed in the way they performed,'' Texas State head coach Danny Kaspar said. ''Some of it was hustle combined with, I hate to say it, but some of our guys when they missed shots, put their head down and were jogging back. But we're going to work on that. If that means rotating guys in and out of the starting lineup, that's what it's going to be.''

The Longhorns had four players score in double figures, including Isaiah Taylor, who scored 15 points on 4-of-6 shooting from the floor while dishing out eight assists without committing a turnover. Jonathan Holmes, who was a perfect 6 of 6 from the free-throw line, chipped in 11 points.

But the star of the night was Ridley, who, after recording just one double-double in his first 37 career games, now has three double-doubles in his last six contests.

''In order for us to be a better team, I have to step up,'' Ridley said. ''My confidence is a lot better this year. I've really been working on scoring on angles, using my body better.''

Texas has won nine of its first 10 games for the fourth time in 16 years under head coach Rick Barnes and for the first time since 2010. The Longhorns now move on to the toughest part of their nonconference schedule as they face No. 18 North Carolina in Chapel Hill on Wednesday - their first road game of the year - before returning home to play No. 5 Michigan State next Saturday.

''We know North Carolina beat Kentucky today so they'll probably be a Top 10 team,'' Taylor said. ''Playing two Top 10 teams in the next two games will be a great challenge. We're going to come in with the right attitude and an attitude to win.''
