No. 24 Notre Dame (22-7) has won seven of its last 10 games, and it might be due to something off the court, according to coach Mike Brey.
In the newest edition of College Hoops Confidential: Notre Dame, Brey shows he's extremely superstitious and has recently switched up his habits to turn them into wins. His most noticeable good luck charm right now is his clothing. He's well known for his staple sideline wardrobe piece, the mock turtleneck and lately he's been rocking an open collar shirt.
“I get as much feedback on my attire now, mock or open collar, as I do to how we play,” Brey said. “It's unbelievable.”
One Notre Dame basketball staffer added, “Coach can be superstitious at times. I think he started ordering his ice tea from a different place and that was working well as we went on this 6-2 stretch.”
Whatever he's wearing or drinking, it must be working because the Irish are fifth in the Big East standings, looking forward to making a run in the Big East Conference and on into the NCAA tournament.
“We've never been to Saturday [final at the Big East Conference],” Brey said. “To come out on a Saturday night at the Garden with our fan base in New York City, I think it would be electric.”
Brey's new routine could be responsible for Notre Dame's confidence and play, but a less superstitious person (and really anyone with eyes) would say it's the play of forward Jack Cooley. The senior finance major leads the team in scoring with 13.9 ppg and 10.6 rebounds.
“My entire freshman season I scored only 20 points, and I do that sometimes in a single night,” Cooley said. “It's just crazy to see how much I've changed, and how different everything's gotten and how much smarter I am in terms of basketball.”
“He became a starter last year and all of a sudden the light bulb goes on and he's a player every day,” Brey said. “This year he's a first-team All Big East guy and he's on the Wooden list.”
Cooley, Brey and the rest of the Irish squad will be looking for a little luck as they try to bounce back from a loss to Marquette. They close out the regular season against St. John's and Louisville and are hoping momentum will carry them into the Big East tournament and maybe to the coveted Saturday night in Madison Square Garden.
