1942 Men's NCAA Basketball Tournament

75 Years of March Madness (NCAA)

1942 NCAA Tournament | Bracket

Champion: Stanford

Most Outstanding Player:Howard Dallmar, Stanford

Final Four: Stanford, Dartmouth, Kentucky, Colorado

Shining Moments

  • Stanfordís best player, Jim Pollard, misses the final game with the flu. Howie Dellmar, who would go on to coach Stanford for two decades, steps in and delivers his team a title.
  • This was the first of 53-to-date NCAA tournament appearances by the Kentucky Wildcats. Rumors that Kentucky fans found ways to razz writers even back then have not been validated, but I believe them nonetheless. (You are the best, Big Blue Nation.)
  • Stanford beat Dartmouth in the final. Both teams carried the ďIndianĒ moniker at the time.
  • Everett Dean, the Stanford coach, has a record that Iím fairly certain will never be matched. It pretty much canít in this age. He went 3-0 in this tournament. It was his only NCAA appearance, so he remains the only coach with an undefeated record in the Big Bracket. (Even though it was a small bracket back then.)
