1945 Men's NCAA Basketball Tournament

75 Years of March Madness (NCAA)

1945 NCAA Tournament | Bracket

Champion: Oklahoma A&M

Most Outstanding Player: Bob Kurland, Oklahoma A&M

Final Four: Oklahoma A&M, NYU, Ohio State, Arkansas

Shining Moments

  • Great nugget: Kurland was a 7-footer, which meant he was actually too tall for the war. So with him, A&M was a juggernaut in 45. A 7-footer in those days was equivalent to a 7-5 guy today. Kurland was the first player who developed a reputation/was known for his dunking.
  • Legendary hoops coach Hank Iba is the one who guided A&M to the title.
  • Eventual NBA great Dolph Schayes played for NYU in this tournament -- as a 16-year-old.
