1953 Men's NCAA Basketball Tournament

75 Years of March Madness (NCAA)

1953 NCAA Tournament | Bracket

Champion: Indiana

Most Outstanding Player: B.H. Born, Kansas

Final Four: LSU, Indiana, Washington, Kansas

Shining Moments

  • Indiana beat Kansas by one point in the championship game, as Bobby Leonard knocked down a free throw with 27 seconds remaining to give the Hoosiers a title
  • .
  • Washington center Bob Houbregs sets an NCAA tournament record with 45 points in a win over rival Seattle. Houbregs ended up averaging 34.8 points in four games, but fouled out after just 18 points against Kansas in the Final Four.
  • Lebanon Valley would have been the ultimate mid-major story. It is the smallest school to ever receive an NCAA tournament bid, and the Flying Dutchmen had no players taller than 6-foot-1.
