1957 Men's NCAA Basketball Tournament

75 Years of March Madness (NCAA)

1957 NCAA Tournament | Bracket

Champion: North Carolina

Most Outstanding Player: Wilt Chamberlain, Kansas

Final Four: North Carolina, Michigan State, Kansas, San Francisco

Shining Moments

  • In the championship game, North Carolina coach Frank McGuire trotted out 5-foot-11 Tommy Kearns to take the tip against Kansas big man Wilt Chamberlain. Despite the 13-inch height disadvantage, Kearns and the Tar Heels held Chamberlain below his season average in points. Moreover, All-American Lennie Rosenbluth had fouled out in regulation and the Tar Heels managed to beat the Jayhawks in three overtimes. It was the second straight three overtime win for North Carolina, which defeated Michigan State in the national semifinal

  • In the national semifinal, Michigan State looked like it would beat North Carolina twice. Jack Quiggle made a 50-footer at the end of regulation, but it was ruled late. In the first overtime, Johnny Green missed a potential game-clinching free throw. North Carolina continued to escape.
  • San Francisco made its third straight run to the Final Four, despite no longer having Bill Russell and not being ranked in the top 25 heading into the tournament.
  • Pittsburgh beat Morehead State in the first round on a last-minute shot by John Laneve. Those were his only points of the entire tournament.
