1958 Men's NCAA Basketball Tournament

75 Years of March Madness (NCAA)

1958 NCAA Tournament | Bracket

Champion: Kentucky

Most Outstanding Player: Elgin Baylor, Seattle

Final Four: Temple, Kentucky, Kansas State, Seattle

Shining Moments

  • Kentucky’s starting five was known as the “Fiddlin’ Five,” as Adolph Rupp constantly mentioned how there were no stars on the team. Yet despite a 19-6 regular season record and no All-Americans, the Wildcats held Elgin Baylor to 9-for-32 shooting in the title game.
  • Kentucky needed heroics from Vernon Hatton throughout the Final Four. He hit a game-winning shot against Temple in the semifinals, and then scored 30 points in the title game.
  • Seattle would never have reached the championship game if not for a 35-footer at the buzzer from Baylor against San Francisco in the regional semifinals.
  • It wasn’t a great tournament for superstars. Jerry West and No. 1 West Virginia were bounced in the first round by Manhattan, while Oscar Robertson missed a game-winning free-throw as Cincinnati lost to Kansas State in the regional semis
