1960 Men's NCAA Basketball Tournament

75 Years of March Madness (NCAA)

1960 NCAA Tournament | Bracket

Champion: Ohio State

Most Outstanding Player: Jerry Lucas, Ohio State

Final Four: Ohio State, California, NYU, Cincinnati

Shining Moments

  • Lucas’ legend in this tournament and as a Buckeye is established in the second round when he scores 36 and grabs 25 rebounds against Western Kentucky.
  • Ohio State’s first and only national championship came because of an 84-percent first-half shooting performance.
  • St. Joseph’s was considered one of the strongest teams in the field (it earned a bye) but was defeated 58-56 by Duke after a controversial ending in which the officials were slow to deliver the ball to SJU after Duke dropped the go-ahead basket in the closing seconds.
  • Oscar Robertson officially became one of the best players to never win an NCAA tournament when his Bearcats lost for the second time in two years to Cal in the Final Four. Cruel irony comes the ensuing two years, when Cincy wins the title. In this tournament, he scored 122 points in four games. The best is the 43 he put up against Kansas in the regional finals.
