1961 Men's NCAA Basketball Tournament

75 Years of March Madness (NCAA)

1961 NCAA Tournament | Bracket

Champion: Cincinnati

Most Outstanding Player: Cincinnati, Ohio State, Saint Joseph’s, Utah

Final Four: Jerry Lucas, Ohio State

Shining Moments

  • Cincinnati wins despite losing three of its best four scorers (most notably, Oscar Robertson). And just as improbable: the title-game upset of Ohio State snipped a 32-game winning streak for the Buckeyes. This was power as college hoops knew it before UCLA would soon overlord the sport for a dozen years.
  • Want to know why Lucas got back-to-back MOPs despite his team not winning it all? He put up 24.5 points and 18.3 rebounds in the four games he played. The great stat came in the team’s regional final against Kentucky, when Lucas out-rebounded the Wildcats 30-29.
  • Cincinnati’s Ed Jucker is the first coach to win a title in his first year at the school.
  • Controversy! For the first few decades of the NCAAs, they played third-place games. This one was historic for a couple of reasons. One, St. Joe’s and Utah needed four overtimes to settle matters, which is still a record for longest tournament game in history (shared with Canisius-N.C. State in ‘56). St. Joe’s won 127-120, but eventually the game was scratched from the books because this was a time when college players often found themselves in game-fixing situations. St. Joe’s had three lettermen tied to gambling/point-shaving. That scandal broke in April of ‘61.
