1965 Men's NCAA Basketball Tournament

75 Years of March Madness (NCAA)

1965 NCAA Tournament | Bracket

Champion: UCLA

Most Outstanding Player: Bill Bradley, Princeton

Final Four: UCLA, Michigan, Wichita State, Princeton

Shining Moments

  • Gail Goodrich put up 42 points in the title game to knock off No. 1 Michigan. We talk of Alcindor and Walton as all-time peak performers for UCLA, but Goodrich and Walt Hazzard were the guys who laid down the foundation in the early years.
  • Bradley was a beast, so much so he earned MOP despite not even reaching the title game. The reason for this: Bradley had an unnatural 58 points in Princeton’s third-place win against Wichita State. Not only that, but he putu p177 points in a five-game span, something that remains a record, though the official “most points in an NCAA tournament” is now held by Glen Rice’s ‘89 showcase over a six-game span. By the way, Princeton making it to the national semis marked the first time in 21 years an Ivy school went so far.
  • Something I’d wish were possible today, but just isn’t: UCLA became the first team to average 100 points in a tournament.
  • Hank Iba coaches in his eighth and final NCAA tournament. He reached the Elite Eight in every year he made the bracket.
