1966 Men's NCAA Basketball Tournament

75 Years of March Madness (NCAA)

1966 NCAA Tournament | Bracket

Champion: Texas Western

Most Outstanding Player: Jerry Chambers, Utah

Final Four: Utah, Duke, Kentucky, Texas Western

Shining Moments

  • Texas Western (now known as Texas-El Paso) made history by having an all-black starting lineup for the first time in NCAA championship history and defeated Kentucky. The victory inspired the 2006 movie Glory Road.
  • Wildcats coach Adolph Rupp was known as an opponent of integrating his program, but couldn't stop the Miners, coached by Don Haskins.
  • Another team from the Bluegrass State also had a memorable loss in the tournament. One of the best seasons in Western Kentucky (24-3) history ended on a controversial jump-ball call in a 80-79 loss to Michigan, led by guard Cazzie Russell.
