1968 Men's NCAA Basketball Tournament

75 Years of March Madness (NCAA)

1968NCAA Tournament | Bracket

Champion: UCLA

Most Outstanding Player: UCLA, North Carolina, Houston, Ohio State

Final Four: Lew Alcindor, UCLA

Shining Moments

  • This tournament produced the fourth of 10 national championships for UCLA coach John Wooden. It was the second of the three that he won with Lew Alcindor, who is arguably the greatest college basketball player in history.
  • The Bruins destroyed Houston in the semifinals by a 101-69 margin. That effort avenged an earlier loss to the Cougars in the Astrodome that snapped UCLA's 47-game winning streak.
  • Houston's Elvin Hayes averaged 41.0 points and 25.3 rebounds in his first three NCAA tournament games, but was held to just 10 points and five rebounds in the Cougars' loss to UCLA.
