75 Years of March Madness (NCAA)

1971 NCAA Tournament | Bracket

Champion: UCLA

Most Outstanding Player: Howard Porter, Villanova

Final Four: Villanova, Western Kentucky, Kansas, UCLA

Shining Moments

  • Steve Patterson is probably not remembered in the same vein as Lew Alcindor or Bill Walton, but he averaged 13.3 points and 7.5 rebounds in the NCAA tournament, including 29 points and eight boards in the title game against Villanova. Sidney Wicks, the previous year’s Most Outstanding Player, averaged 15.0 points and 13.0 rebound
  • s.
  • Two of the Final Four teams later had their appearances vacated by the NCAA. Villanova’s Howard Porter – also the Most Outstanding Player – was found to have signed a pro contract, while Western Kentucky’s Jim McDaniels had also signed with the ABA
  • .
  • USC was the No. 3-ranked team in the country heading into the NCAA tournament – but the Trojans could not play in either the NCAA or NIT tournaments. The Pac-8 had a rule that only one team per season could play in the postseason, and UCLA had won the league.
