1973 Men's NCAA Basketball Tournament

75 Years of March Madness (NCAA)

1973 NCAA Tournament | Bracket

Champion: UCLA

Most Outstanding Player: Bill Walton, UCLA

Final Four: Memphis, Providence, Indiana, UCLA

Shining Moments

  • Walton had arguably the best single-game performance in Final Four history, when he shot 21-for-22 from the field en route to 44 points and 13 rebounds against Memphis.
  • The No. 2 team in the country, North Carolina State, went 27-0 but the Wolfpack were ineligible to play in the NCAA tournament because of a recruiting violation involving recruit David Thompson and an assistant coach playing in a pickup game.
  • Indiana head coach Bob Knight reached his first Final Four in 1973, leading the Hoosiers to a 19-5 record before losing to UCLA in the national semifinals.
