1974 Men's NCAA Basketball Tournament

75 Years of March Madness (NCAA)

1974 NCAA Tournament | Bracket

Champion: North Carolina State

Most Outstanding Player: David Thompson, NC State

Final Four: NC State, UCLA, Marquette, Kansas

Shining Moments

  • NC State snapped UCLA’s run of seven consecutive NCAA championships – as well as the Bruins’ 38-game NCAA tournament winning streak, when the Wolfpack knocked them off in double-overtime in the Final Four. Earlier that season, UCLA had defeated NC State. In the Final Four game, the Wolfpack overcame a double-digit deficit in the second half, as well as a seven-point deficit in the second overtime.
  • UCLA’s early departure in the NCAA tournament almost came against Dayton in the regional semifinals, when the Bruins needed three overtimes to beat the Flyers.
  • Maryland finished No. 4 in the national rankings, but a 103-100 overtime loss to North Carolina State in the ACC tournament final meant the Terrapins couldn’t play in the NCAA tournament.
  • Fun fact: NC State never left the state of North Carolina during its run to the championship.
