1975 Men's NCAA Basketball Tournament

75 Years of March Madness (NCAA)

1975 NCAA Tournament | Bracket

Champion: UCLA

Most Outstanding Player: Richard Washington, UCLA

Final Four: UCLA, Louisville, Syracuse, Kentucky

Shining Moments

  • 1975 was John Wooden’s final season as the head coach of UCLA, and he fittingly ended it with a 10th national championship. He announced his retirement after the Bruins’ national semifinal win over Louisville in overtime. The Bruins proceeded to beat Kentucky in the championship game behind 28 points from Richard Washington.
  • UCLA came awfully close to ending Wooden’s career before the championship. Louisville was up by one in the semifinals with 20 seconds left, but Terry Howard – who had gone 28-for-28 from the free-throw line during the season, missed two free throws and UCLA pulled out a win on Washington’s baseline jumper. Furthermore, UCLA needed overtime to beat Michigan in the first round of the tournament.
  • Indiana entered the newly-expanded NCAA tournament (32 teams) with an undefeated record, but the Hoosiers were bounced by Kentucky in the regional finals. Scott May was hampered by an arm injury, playing just seven minutes against the Wildcats.
  • According to the NCAA, the first mention of the term “Final Four” came in 1975, when sportswriter Ed Chay used it in an article about Marquette.
