1985 Men's NCAA Basketball Tournament

75 Years of March Madness (NCAA)

1985 NCAA Tournament | Bracket

Champion: Villanova

Most Outstanding Player: Ed Pinckney, Villanova

Final Four: St. John’s, Georgetown, Memphis, Villanova

Shining Moments

  • As a No. 8 seed, Villanova became the lowest-seeded team to ever win a national title. The Wildcats essentially played a perfect game against heavily-favored Georgetown, shooting 78.6 percent from the field and also knocking down 22 free throws. Villanova had beaten Dayton, Michigan and Maryland by a combined nine points, then defeated North Carolina (shooting 76 percent in the second half) and Memphis to reach the title game.
  • There were three Big East teams in the Final Four, as St. John’s joined Georgetown and Villanova in Lou Carnesecca’s only Final Four. The fourth team, Memphis, later had its appearance vacated by the NCAA. Interestingly, a fourth Big East team (Boston College) could have reached the Final Four, but turned it over late in its regional semifinal loss to Memphis. Memphis’ Andre Turner hit two game-winners during the tournament.
  • Wayman Tisdale and Karl Malone battled in the regional semifinal, but Tisdale got the win, as his jumper with two seconds left gave Oklahoma an overtime victory over Louisiana Tech.
  • 1985 was the first 64-team NCAA tournament.
