1987 Men's NCAA Basketball Tournament

75 Years of March Madness (NCAA)

1987 NCAA Tournament | Bracket

Champion: Indiana

Most Outstanding Player: Keith Smart, Indiana

Final Four: Indiana, Syracuse, Providence, UNLV

Shining Moments

  • Keith Smart's game-winning shot that gave the Hoosiers the national title. Smart was a former junior college kid who knocked down a 16-footer with five seconds remaining -- and also scored 12 of his team's final 15 points. It was one of the most dramatic shots in Final Four history.
  • A young, fairly unknown coach named Rick Pitino took a Providence team led by Billy Donovan to the Final Four by taking advantage of the new 3-point shot that was implemented prior to the season. It was a true Cinderella story as no one thought Providence would make a Final Four appearance.
  • UNLV's Freddie Banks buried a Final Four-record 10 3-pointers in the national semifinals against Indiana, but the Runnin' Rebels came up short, 97-93.
  • This was the final time that teams were allowed to have a home-court advantage in the NCAA tournament.
