1991 Men's NCAA Basketball Tournament

75 Years of March Madness (NCAA)

1991 NCAA Tournament | Bracket

Champion: Duke

Most Outstanding Player: Christian Laettner, Duke ky

Final Four: Duke, Kansas, UNLV, North Carolina

Shining Moments

  • Duke and Mike Krzyzewski turn the tables on the Blue Devils and their coach’s reputation by taking it to UNLV and getting revenge for the most lopsided title game outcome from a year before. Duke wins its national semi 79-77 over undefeated-’til-then Vegas, then goes on to beat Kansas 72-65 in a game few can remember with detail despite the fact it was K’s -- and Duke’s -- first title. The run begins a 13-game winning streak for Duke, the second-longest tourney streak to UCLA’s 38
  • .
  • The other Final Four game features Roy Williams beating his mentor, Dean Smith, when Kansas wins 79-73. Earlier in the tournament Smith tied John Wooden’s record for NCAA tournament wins (at the time 47) and became the first coach to go to the Final Four in four separate decades.
  • It was the first tournament to use tenths of a second in the final minute of play for the end of both halves.
  • CBS Sports starts a new seven-year deal to broadcast the tournament. The total of the contract is $1 billion, breaking an unprecedented barrier.
