1995 Men's NCAA Basketball Tournament

75 Years of March Madness (NCAA)

1995 NCAA Tournament | Bracket

Champion: UCLA

Most Outstanding Player: Ed O'Bannon, UCLA

Final Four: UCLA, Arkansas, Oklahoma State, North Carolina

Shining Moments

  • Toby Freaking Bailey. It’s a name that’s as synonymous with ‘90s college sports as Tommie Frazier, Bobby Hurley, Desmond Howard and cursive-signature player introductions on TV broadcasts. Due to UCLA star point guard Tyus Edney being injured, Bailey and the O’Bannon brothers bring UCLA its first title in 20 years, also the first one won without John Wooden on the sideline (he was there to witness it in person). Defending champ Arkansas falls in the final. The Hogs set a tournament record by sinking 60 3-pointers in six games.
  • Fourth-seeded Oklahoma State reaches the Final Four thanks to the play of big man Bryant “Big Country” Reeves, who breaks a backboard during practice before his team’s national semi game against UCLA.
  • UCLA doesn’t win the title if Edney doesn’t deliver the highlight of the ‘95 tournament in the second round. The Bruins’ point guard goes end to end in 4.8 seconds against a slow-to-react Missouri defense that gives up the game-winning layup as time expires. UCLA 75, Missouri 74.
  • After building a program for decades in D-II, Jim Phelan (he of 830 wins) reaches his first NCAA tournament as coach of Mount St. Mary’s.
